Here’s what to expect as a VAI graduate student

Going to graduate school is a life-changing decision that requires careful thought and consideration.

Why do you want to go to grad school? What do you want to study? What type of environment works best for you?

If you’re looking for a world-class program that transforms students into scientists, Van Andel Institute Graduate School is the place for you. We offer an interdisciplinary, research-intensive Ph.D. in molecular and cellular biology that combines problem-based learning, extensive mentorship and state-of-the-art support to prepare students for successful careers.

Intrigued? Here’s a sneak peek at what to expect as a VAI Graduate School student:

1. Learning by doing

The Graduate School’s Ph.D. program leverages problem-based learning, a process that employs critical thinking and problem-solving to mirror the scientific process. From day one, our students are immersed in research and treated as scientists.

In their first year, students complete foundational modules in biochemistry, genetics, epigenetics and more. Unlike traditional lecture-based classes, our classes offer thought-provoking problems that students need to solve — just like they will in the lab. Students also rotate through our labs, exploring different research fields before choosing their dissertation labs. This early exploration helps students identify their interests and prepare for their future.

2. Extensive mentorship

We foster meaningful mentorship between our faculty and students. From the moment you step foot into the Graduate School, you’ll receive extensive and thoughtful guidance from distinguished faculty, all of whom have made and continue to make significant contributions to their fields.
