The Strategy: AI-Assisted Collaborative Storytelling

The premise of this exercise is simple yet profoundly engaging: the class collaborates with an AI to build a story, with each entity contributing alternate sentences. This method combines human imagination with the unpredictability of AI, resulting in a story that is both creative and surprising.

Step 1: Setting the Stage for Storytelling

Begin by introducing the concept to the class. Explain how the AI works and how it can contribute to building a story. Set some basic guidelines for the story, such as the genre, setting, or main characters, to give the students a starting point. This initial setup is crucial as it lays the foundation for the collaborative narrative.

Step 2: Kicking Off the Story

Prompt an AI chatbot to start the story with a sentence or two that conforms to your class’s preferences around genre, setting, and characters. The goal is for this opening to spark interest and set an intriguing tone for the tale.

Step 3: Student Participation and Decision Making

Following the AI’s contribution, open the floor for students to suggest the next sentence. Encourage creativity and exploration of different ideas. This can be done by calling on volunteers or by having students vote on several proposed options. The chosen sentence is then added to the story, followed by another from the AI, and so on. Alternatively, you can have individuals or small groups of students interact directly with the AI, provided they are old enough to do so.

Step 4: Building the Story Together

Continue this process of alternating between AI-generated sentences and student contributions. As the story unfolds, it will likely take twists and turns, driven by the combined creativity of the students and the AI. Guide the students to ensure the story remains coherent and engaging.

Step 5: Conclusion and Reflection

Once the story reaches a natural end or the allotted time is up, conclude the tale. Reflect on the experience with the class, discussing what they found interesting, challenging, or surprising about collaborating with AI in storytelling.

Educational Benefits

This AI-assisted storytelling exercise offers several educational benefits:

  • Fosters Creativity and Imagination: Students are encouraged to think creatively as they build a story with unpredictable AI inputs.
