West Michigan lost one of its treasures this month with the passing of Lena Meijer, whose love extended not only to her family and close friends but to larger communities of people whose lives were enriched by her warmth and generosity.
From humble beginnings on a farm in central Lower Michigan, Lena eventually grew to accept a role that would put her in a spotlight she embraced because it allowed her to express her heart for others. She was known for her kindness and generosity, which touched so many of us through education, hospitality, entertainment, history, the arts and much more.
Together with her husband Fred, Lena helped change the Grand Rapids skyline and alter the West Michigan culture, creating jobs and opportunities for people with diverse skills and interests. She will be missed and remembered for the ways in which she nourished countless individuals and organizations, and our hearts and prayers are with her three sons and their families who survive her.
