SEVIS is a web-based information system for maintaining data on international students and exchange visitors in the United States. SEVIS is administered by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP), a division of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the largest investigative arm of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
SEVIS allows Exchange Visitor Program sponsors to exchange information about exchange visitors with U.S. government bodies, such as DHS, Social Security Administration, Department of Motor Vehicles, Citizenship and Immigration Services, and Department of State (including U.S. Embassies and Consulates).
All J-1 Exchange Visitors are required to submit a one-time fee payment of $180 USD to cover the administration and maintenance costs of SEVIS. You will need to pay the SEVIS fee after receiving your Form DS-2019, but before attending your visa interview appointment. For more information, visit http://www.ice.gov/sevis/i901/.
Be sure to have a printer handy when paying the fee. You will need to print your receipt as evidence of I-901 fee payment for your J-1 visa application, entry into the United States, and to request reimbursement under VAI’s Relocation Reimbursement program (if applicable).
