Chairman and Chief Executive Officer

David Van Andel is Chairman and CEO of the Van Andel Institute for Education and Medical Research in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He is also an entrepreneur involved in several other business interests in the natural and life science products industries.

The son of Jay Van Andel, Founder of the Van Andel Institute and Co-Founder of Amway Corporation, he is currently a member of Amway’s Board of Directors and serves on its Executive, Governance and Audit committees. Prior to leading the Van Andel Institute, he had been in various positions at Amway since 1977 including Chief Operating Officer of Amway’s Pyxis Innovations Business Unit and was Senior Vice President – Americas and Europe, overseeing the Amway business activities in North America and 22 European and 11 Latin American affiliates.

Love Collins III

Vice President of Development, Communications and Marketing

Mr. Love Collins, III joined the Van Andel Institute in 2011. He has more than 35 years of leadership experience in the areas of management, capital campaigns, major gifts, finance, strategic planning, donor cultivation, stewardship and other business processes. Prior to joining VAI, Mr. Collins served as Executive Vice President for Advancement at Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina.

Jana Hall

Chief Operations Officer

Jana Hall, Ph.D., M.B.A., joined Van Andel Institute in 2012 as Chief Operations Officer, following nearly twenty years in research administration and operations management for a 6,400-employee healthcare organization and most recently as a science and technology advisor for the United States Department of State. Between 1992 and 2010, Dr. Hall served as Director, Executive Director and Vice President for Hawaii Pacific Health, Honolulu, a non-profit healthcare network that includes four hospitals, more than 40 clinics, 1,300 physicians and 6,400 employees.

Peter Jones, Ph.D, D.Sc.

VARI Research Director and Chief Scientific Officer

Dr. Jones was born in South Africa, raised and attended college in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), and received his Ph.D. from the University of London. He joined the University of Southern California in 1977..

David Whitescarver

Vice President and Chief Legal Officer

David Whitescarver serves as Van Andel Institute's Vice President and Chief Legal Officer. He manages the legal affairs of VAI, Van Andel Research Institute, and Van Andel Education Institute and serves as secretary to the boards of each organization. Whitescarver is a globally-experienced leader of legal programs and teams in major healthcare and IT organizations.  Prior to joining VAI, he served as Vice President, General Counsel & Secretary of New York Blood Center, Inc., where he also led the technology transfer office.  He previously held senior legal leadership positions at Medtronic, Inc., including as general counsel of its Vascular Division where he was awarded Medtronic’s Outstanding Leadership Award, and at Gateway, Inc. in Asia and Europe.  Whitescarver was a corporate associate at Rogers & Wells (now Clifford Chance) and served as a law clerk to Judge Howard M. Holtzmann at the Iran-United States Claims Tribunal in The Hague, The Netherlands.

Jerry Callahan

Vice President of Business Development and Extramural Administration

Jerry Callahan, Ph.D., MBA is Van Andel Institute's Vice President of Business Development & Extramural Administration, having held various leadership roles at the Institute since 2004. Dr. Callahan has been deeply involved in commercial development of life science business in west Michigan. In his career he has formed two private equity and venture capital investment firms which have raised more than $60 million focused in the life sciences. Additionally, he has launched several startup life science companies and has served in various leadership roles including Chairman, CEO, CIO and COO. Dr. Callahan serves on the boards of several life science and non-profit entities including Van Andel Institute's Board of Governors.

Timothy Myers

Vice President and Chief Financial Officer

Timothy Myers serves as Van Andel Institute’s Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. In this role, Myers is responsible for overseeing all financial aspects of the Institute, including business planning, financial reporting, budgeting, tax compliance, treasury and risk management, and endowment management. Myers joined the Institute in 1998, leading the development and launch of its finance and accounting function. Prior to March 2010, he served as Van Andel Institute’s Controller. Prior to joining VAI, Myers served as an Internal Auditor for Amway Corporation and was also a Senior Associate at Coopers & Lybrand, LLP. He completed his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Business Administration in professional accounting at Michigan State University and is a Certified Public Accountant in the State of Michigan.

Linda Zarzecki

Vice President of Human Resources

Linda Zarzecki joined Van Andel Institute in 1999 as Manager of Human Resources. Since then, she has been promoted to the role of Vice President of Human Resources. Prior to her position at VAI, Zarzecki was with Amway Corporation for twenty-two years where she held various positions. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration at Aquinas College, and her Master of Business Administration at Western Michigan University.
