NIH T-32 Training Program in Hypothesis-Based Biomedical Research for Veterinary Students
The College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) at Michigan State University has been awarded a research training grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for veterinary students. This one-year-long training program will allow exceptional veterinary students to train in hypothesis-based biomedical research. Each student selected into the program will be matched to a research mentor who is a CVM faculty member participating in the program. Students selected will receive a stipend at the NIH predoctoral rate and a tuition waiver for course work associated with the training program.
The program has been structured for third-year CVM students to enter at the completion of their pre-clinical curriculum (after completion of Semester 5). Students will re-enter the veterinary curriculum after completion of the one-year research training program. The training program is built around five areas of research expertise in the College of Veterinary Medicine:
- Toxicology
- Food safety and emerging infectious disease
- Comparative molecular genetics
- Neuroscience
- Mechanisms of non-infectious respiratory disease
Goals for all students in the program will be to present an abstract of their research at a national or international scientific meeting (funding is available to cover travel expenses), publish the results of their research in a peer-reviewed scientific journal, and present their research at the annual CVM Phi Zeta Research Day. This research training may be applied toward the completion of a graduate degree. Although most of the research training takes place on the MSU campus, there is also an option for a research rotation at Van Andel Research Institute in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Note: This program is also open to veterinary students from other colleges of veterinary medicine. Flexible application deadlines and start times are available for students applying from outside of Michigan State University. Applicants must be citizens of the United States or have permanent residency status. Veterinary students form outside of Michigan State University should contact Dr. John Baker directly at 517-432-2388 or e-mail him.
