Technology Transfer

Through Technology Transfer, Van Andel Institute can translate research from the laboratory to results that benefit patients more quickly.  Technology Transfer allows VAI to license research results with commercial potential to pharmaceutical companies, manufacturers, and other organizations that can transform these results into new products, processes, applications, or services.

Gentel Biosciences and Van Andel Institute Announce New Technology to Improve Early Detection and Prognosis of Cancer

Gentel Biosciences, a leader in proteomics tools, and Van Andel Research Institute (VARI), a biomedical research institute, jointly announce today the granting of U.S. Patent 7,838,634 for a new method to profile changes in the glycosylation of proteins captured on the surface of an antibody array slide.  Gentel first obtained an exclusive right to commercialize the technology in 2006. The Technology Transfer Office (TTO) at Van Andel Institute protects the Institute's intellectual property and facilitates its commercialization to licensees/industry for economic development and the benefit of society. The TTO offers researchers expertise and guidance to VAI employees regarding the protection of intellectual property and technology transfer. The TTO also performs the following services for the Institute:

  • Evaluates invention disclosures
  • Manages the patent process 
  • Markets VAI’s intellectual properties
  • Negotiates confidentiality, material transfer, collaboration and licensing agreements with industries and other research institutions 
  • Monitors existing licenses for compliance with contractual obligations 
  • Facilitates the development of start-up companies based on VAI’s intellectual property
