General Overview

The Haab laboratory works to enable more accurate detection and diagnosis of pancreatic cancer and to identify key factors in cancer progression and dissemination. Our approaches make heavy use of understanding the nature and functions of changes to carbohydrates in pancreatic cancer. Most secreted proteins have carbohydrates (also called glycans) attached to them. The glycans produced by cancer cells can have altered structures relative to those produced by normal cells, and by detecting both the protein and the glycan attached to the protein, more accurate detection of cancer can be achieved. The Haab laboratory is advancing new experimental approaches and bioinformatics tools to fully investigate the protein and glycan characteristics of human tissue samples. Using these methods, biomarkers are being developed to help determine what type of treatment course should be followed and to monitor the course of that treatment.
