Diseases We Study

Diseases we study include:

Cancer

melanoma

An average of more than 1,500 people are expected to die of cancer each day. Van Andel Research Institute (VARI) scientists look for ways to fight several types of cancer through basic research. VARI's alliance with TGen helps to more quickly translate findings into treatments and tools that can benefit patients.

Neurodegenerative Diseases

brain

In 2010, the first Baby Boomers turn 65, the average age of Parkinson's diagnosis. VAI founders Jay and Betty Van Andel both suffered from neurological diseases; Jay had Parkinson's and Betty had Alzheimer's. The new Jay Van Andel Parkinson Research Lab will allow the Institute to dedicate more resources to the study of this debilitating disease, and increased laboratory space in the Phase II building expansion allows for research into other neurological diseases as well.

Studies branch out into several disease areas. Researchers are finding information that can help drug developers design more potent therapies with fewer side effects, are looking for new drug targets for the bone marrow disease MDS, and are conducting osteoporosis research could lead to ways to stimulate bone growth.
