Dr. Vande Woude was the founding director of Van Andel Research Institute, and continues to head the Laboratory of Molecular Oncology at the Institute as Distinguished Scientific Fellow. Dr. Vande Woude has a distinguished background in administrative leadership; he served as the Director of the Basic Research Program at the Frederick Cancer Research and Development Center as well as Director for the Division of Basic Sciences at the National Cancer Institute.  Dr. Vande Woude has also had a remarkable research career that includes work with an important target in the development of anti-cancer drugs: MET.

The Daniel Nathans Memorial Award honors the memory of Dr. Daniel Nathans, a distinguished member of the scientific community and a founding member of Van Andel Institute’s Board of Scientific Advisors who succumbed to cancer in 1999. The award recognizes individuals who emulate Dr. Nathans through their outstanding contributions to biomedical and cancer research.
