phase IIVan Andel Institute's 240,000 square-foot, eight-story Phase II building expansion opened in December 2009! Phase II nearly triples the Institute's laboratory space, allowing for growth of current laboratories and expanded research into neurological diseases. This means more researchers will be dedicated to finding ways to help fight cancer and other diseases. Phase II means more hope for patients and families around the world.

Building Details

The Van Andel Institute building was designed by famed architect Rafael Viñoly external link to be constructed in two phases; the first phase was completed in 2000 and Phase II opened in December 2009. When operating at capacity, the expansion will augment the existing 162,000 square-foot facility to support a $125 million annual research operation employing 800 researchers and administrative staff.

The glass roof design and open plan of Phase II mimics the existing building, offering abundant natural light, a unique open laboratory layout, and flexible laboratory and meeting spaces. It also offers enhancements such as a 90-seat conference center and a 100-seat cafeteria, a demonstration lab for visitors to view research in progress, a history wall, an expanded library, interior design that reflects the diversity of the Institute, and several “green” features (learn more about green features and LEED certification).
