Van Andel Research Institute (VARI) is an independent, not-for-profit medical research facility that has gained worldwide recognition for basic and translational research into the genetic and molecular origins of cancer and other human diseases. The Institute is creating a new group to lead the exploration, launch and management of international offices/laboratories and seeks a highly motivated and experienced International Business Analyst.
Position Summary: This critical position will focus on exploring new international laboratory/office locations, developing a complete business plan and feasibility analysis of promising sites, work with the Director of International Programs to present prospects to VARI’s review committee, and oversee the operational aspects of establishing new laboratories/offices once selected. This is a US based position requiring US and international travel.
Responsibilities:
- Develop business plans for international research operations
- Conduct market studies, operational analysis, forecasting and data research on prospective locations
- Prepare feasibility studies and presentation to VARI and potential International partners
- Knowledgeable of VARI’s International sites
- Facilitate performance assessment, development and operation processes
- Establish operational resources for start-up remote laboratory/office

Requirements:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in management, economics, finance, international business, accounting or related fields
- Minimum of 5-7 years experience in a business analyst or consulting environment, preferably within roles responsible for research/market analysis or project management in a matrix environment
- Goal oriented, self starter with ability to work for periods on projects without daily direction
- Ability and desire to travel abroad to evaluate new laboratory locations from a business and operational perspective
- Experience with opening or managing remote international operations for a parent organization as an employee or consultant
- Excellent communication skills and ability to converse with multiple levels of scientific and organizational leadership
- Confidence, flexibility and interest in foreign cultures
- Highly developed interpersonal, networking, relationship building and negotiating skills to enable working with a diverse range of people and cultures and at a variety of levels
- Familiar with international taxation and regulations, a plus
- Sound understanding of the scientific / research environment
- Fluency in English and other languages, preferred.
- Strong analytical skills matched by excellent oral and written communication skills
- Proven track record of successfully influencing multicultural and multidisciplinary teams
- Strong team player with a sense of urgency and copes well under pressure
- Advance science or business degree as well as a high degree of competence with computer and presentation skills.
