Social Security Number

A Social Security Number is a type of identification number issued to an individual by the U.S. Social Security Administration to record the earnings of the individual for taxation purposes. The nine digit number is assigned to the individual for his/her lifetime. If you will be receiving any type of payment from the Institute, you will need to apply for a social security number.

The Institute has been advised by the U.S. Social Security Administration that it is better for international scholars to wait 10-14 days before applying for a social security number; therefore, Cathy Amodeo, Relocation Coordinator, will assist you in applying for a social security number after you have been in the United States (U.S.) for 10-14 days. However, please note that it will take several weeks to obtain a social security number after submitting an application with the Social Security Administration.
