A message from Steven Triezenberg, VAIGS Dean

Welcome to VAI Graduate School (VAIGS) on the Web! The goal of this new graduate school is to train Ph.D. scientists as leading scholars in cell, molecular and genetic biology relevant to human diseases.

Our unique doctoral training program takes advantage of remarkable opportunities in this field of science and in this scientific community to prepare researchers for effective careers linking the discoveries of basic science with the applications needed for improved human health.

Our graduate program is both distinct and distinctive. VAI Graduate School has an independent charter from the State of Michigan to confer advanced degrees. Thus, we are not formally linked to any other college or university, although we work closely with colleges and universities in this region and throughout the state. More importantly, the components of our program set us apart from other doctoral programs. Because we exist solely as a graduate institution, our educational mission is focused entirely on the effective training of our doctoral students.

Our curriculum is unique in leading students to explore fundamental concepts in genetics, biochemistry and cell and molecular biology through integrated courses based on current research questions. Our small class size emphasizes cooperative learning strategies. Other facets of our program enable our students to rapidly integrate into the ranks of professional scientists.

We encourage applications from students with a sincere motivation for doing molecular and genetic research that makes a difference for human health.
